Software Engineer, Voice Systems (0–3 Years Experience)
Spool AIFull Description
Spool is building the execution layer for AI: software that doesn’t just answer questions, but actually gets things done in the real world. We believe the future of AI is not another chatbot tab. It’s systems that can navigate complexity, coordinate across tools, and handle the invisible operational overhead of daily life.
One of the core ways Spool operates in the world today is through phone calls. Our agents call insurance companies, medical offices, contractors, airlines, restaurants, and more. We’re looking for an early-career software engineer to help own and evolve our voice and phone systems.
This is not a narrowly-scoped “tickets only” role. You’ll join as one of the earliest members of a very small team, working directly on production systems that real users rely on every day.
What You’ll Start With
You will take primary ownership over significant portions of Spool’s call pipeline and voice experience. That includes maintaining, improving, debugging, and extending systems that sit directly in the critical path of real-world user outcomes.
Your work may include:
* Voice agent reliability and conversational quality
* Call routing, transfers, and interruption handling
* Telephony integrations and tooling
* Internal dashboards and debugging systems
* Latency, observability, and production monitoring
* Prompting and orchestration logic for voice interactions
* Edge cases around real-world phone systems and IVRs
* Experimentation infrastructure and quality measurement
This role starts with deep ownership over the phone experience because it’s one of the most strategically important parts of the company today. But at a team this small, ownership evolves quickly. The best ideas can come from anywhere, and engineers at Spool are expected to think beyond narrowly defined job boundaries.
We care a lot about people who can look at technical systems from a user perspective, question assumptions (including AI-generated ones), and help shape not just how something is implemented, but whether it actually solves the problem well.
Mentorship, Growth & Exposure
You’ll work closely with engineers and operators from organizations including Caltech, Amazon, Palantir, and ElevenLabs, with direct access to senior technical and product leadership.
Because Spool is still early, engineers here also get unusually broad exposure to how a startup actually works. You’ll see the behind-the-scenes realities of building a company from the ground up, including product strategy, experimentation, infrastructure decisions, fundraising, hiring, growth, and brand development.
We don’t expect everyone’s long-term path to look the same. We’re interested in working with ambitious people, helping them grow quickly, and building something great together in the process.
How We Work
We’re a highly collaborative, remote-first team. That only works when people communicate proactively and are comfortable speaking up early when blocked, confused, or unconvinced by something.
We value people who ask questions, push back thoughtfully, and engage seriously with ideas, even outside their immediate area of ownership.
You do not need to know everything on day one. But you do need to be curious, rigorous, fast-moving, and willing to learn publicly.
You Might Be a Fit If You
* Have 0–3 years of software engineering experience
* Are completely comfortable in at least one programming language
* Have strong logical reasoning skills
* Love solving difficult engineering problems
* Care deeply about user experience, not just technical correctness
* Think critically about the outputs of LLMs rather than accepting them at face value
* Like figuring things out without waiting for perfect structure or instructions
* Communicate proactively and work well in highly collaborative environments
* Are excited about building tools that help real people solve real-world problems
Experience with any of the following is a plus, but not required:
* Python, TypeScript, Node.js
* Twilio or telephony systems
* LLMs, prompting, or agentic systems
* Realtime systems
* AWS/cloud infrastructure
* Observability tooling
* Conversational interfaces
What the Role Looks Like
* Full-time role
* Small, senior, intensely collaborative team
* Remote-first, with occasional in-person time/offsites
* Direct exposure to product, infrastructure, experimentation, and company-building
* High trust and high autonomy
You will not be siloed away from “real work.” If something matters to the product, you may very well be working on it.
About Spool
We think modern life is drowning in operational overhead: calls, forms, scheduling, follow-ups, insurance bureaucracy, logistics, coordination. The existing AI ecosystem is very good at generating text and surprisingly bad at actually resolving problems.
We’re building systems that can reason, act, verify outcomes, and follow through.
If that sounds exciting to you, we’d love to hear from you.
