distinguished engineer – applied artificial intelligence engineering
brk tech, A Berkshire Hathaway Group CompanyFull Description
about the company
brk tech is a new kind of technology organization within Berkshire Hathaway—built to empower world-class businesses with accelerated adoption of technologies and artificial intelligence at the bleeding edge of innovation. Our mission is to help operating companies evolve from technology buyers into builders by infusing tech talent in their organizations, identifying common design patterns, developing reusable reference architectures, and unlocking the power of shared intellectual property. Recognizing Berkshire’s foundational value of a decentralized model for its businesses, we operate at the intersection of that autonomy and scale—partnering deeply with subsidiaries to modernize platforms, accelerate data and AI adoption, and strengthen cyber resilience, while leveraging Berkshire’s collective strengths to forge strategic technology alliances. This is a rare opportunity to shape the technological backbone of one of the most iconic enterprises in the world, collaborating with the leaders of individual businesses.
role overview
We are seeking a Distinguished Engineer in Artificial Intelligence to serve as a company-wide technical authority and catalyst for applied AI-driven transformation. This role sits at the center of BRK Tech’s mandate to industrialize applied AI across a highly decentralized portfolio—translating cutting-edge research into deployable systems that create measurable business impact. You will define AI frameworks, guide model development at scale, and enable rapid iteration cycles to “fast-twitch” problem solve across diverse use cases—from customer service to operations, underwriting, logistics, and beyond.
key responsibilities
* Define and drive enterprise AI reference architectures spanning data ingestion, model development, deployment, and monitoring across subsidiaries
* Lead development of reusable AI frameworks, toolkits, and pipelines that accelerate time-to-value across operating companies
* Architect scalable systems for training, fine-tuning, and deploying models in hybrid environments
* Partner with affiliate leaders to identify high-impact AI use cases and translate them into production-grade solutions
* Establish standards for model evaluation, observability, governance, and lifecycle management
* Drive rapid prototyping and iteration cycles to solve high-priority business problems with speed and precision
* Contribute to inner-sourced intellectual property by codifying best practices, reusable components, and shared learnings
* Evaluate and integrate emerging AI capabilities—including advances from platforms such as OpenAI—into scalable enterprise solutions
required technical expertise
* 15+ years of experience in AI/ML, distributed systems, or data-intensive engineering roles, with advanced degrees in computer science, machine learning, or related fields
* Deep expertise in modern AI/ML techniques, including deep learning, generative models, and large-scale model training and inference
* Hands-on experience with frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow
* Strong understanding of data engineering, feature pipelines, and MLOps practices for productionizing models
* Experience building and scaling AI systems in cloud and hybrid environments
* Familiarity with model evaluation, alignment, and responsible AI practices
* Ability to balance theoretical rigor with pragmatic engineering to deliver production-ready solutions quickly
leadership & impact
* Act as a trusted advisor to senior executives and technical leaders across Berkshire Hathaway subsidiaries
* Mentor and elevate senior and principal engineers—setting the bar for engineering excellence and architectural rigor
* Lead through influence, not authority—aligning diverse stakeholders around shared standards and long-term platform strategy
* Drive innovation by identifying emerging technologies and translating them into pragmatic, high-impact use cases across the portfolio
* Establish a “builder mindset” across the portfolio—enabling teams to move from experimentation to scaled deployment
* Create durable competitive advantage by embedding AI deeply into the operating fabric of Berkshire’s businesses
This is a role for a builder who thrives at the edge of innovation and execution—someone who can move seamlessly from first principles to production systems, and from individual insight to enterprise-wide impact.
