Fine-Tuning

The process of further training a pre-trained AI model on domain-specific data to improve its performance on particular tasks.

Fine-tuning takes a pre-trained model — one that has already learned general patterns from a large dataset — and continues training it on a smaller, task-specific dataset. This adapts the model's capabilities to a particular domain or use case without the enormous cost of training from scratch.

For example, a general-purpose language model can be fine-tuned on medical records to become a clinical assistant, or on legal documents to aid contract review. The process requires curated training data, careful hyperparameter selection, and evaluation against domain-specific benchmarks.

Fine-tuning expertise is especially valuable at companies building vertical AI products. Roles that involve fine-tuning typically require strong foundations in machine learning, experience with training infrastructure, and knowledge of techniques like LoRA, QLoRA, and parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT).
